The cinema of Colombia

Colombian cinema tells a story of remarkable transformation, a film culture that has bravely stared into its complex past to forge a vibrant, new creative identity. For years, its storytellers have grappled with the nation's turbulent history, a theme that has fuelled some of its most powerful films. But out of this has emerged a stunning artistic renaissance. This revolution reached a global audience with the Oscar-nominated masterpiece, Embrace of the Serpent (El Abrazo de la Serpiente). Directed by Ciro Guerra, this breathtaking black-and-white journey into the heart of the Amazon announced a new, poetic, and powerful voice in world cinema. But Colombia's screen magic also has a wonderfully popular side. It is the nation that gave the world Yo soy Betty, la fea (Ugly Betty), arguably the most successful telenovela in history, adapted in dozens of countries and proving its storytelling could conquer hearts globally. This legacy continues today, with slick, high-budget series produced for international streaming platforms, earning critical acclaim and huge audiences. What makes Colombian cinema so captivating is this very blend of magical imagination, reminiscent of its literary giant Gabriel García Márquez, and raw reality. It is a cinema reborn, telling stories with incredible soul and a spirit as resilient as the country itself.
