The cinema of Nepal

Nepali cinema is a world of soaring peaks and vibrant spirit, a film culture set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Himalayas. For decades, its heart was 'Kollywood', the Kathmandu-based industry famous for its colourful musicals and melodramatic family sagas, with beloved directors like Tulsi Ghimire becoming household names. These films were the lifeblood of popular culture, telling stories deeply rooted in folk tales and tradition. But in the new millennium, a creative earthquake shook the industry. It began with films like the moody, psychological Kagbeni, but the revolution truly exploded with Loot, a gritty, stylish crime thriller that became a massive cultural phenomenon. It announced a new wave of filmmaking: raw, realistic, and unapologetically modern. This success has paved the way for a generation of directors who are now earning major awards at international film festivals with beautifully crafted films like The Black Hen (Kalo Pothi) and White Sun (Seto Surya). Meanwhile, long-running television comedy serials remain a cherished national pastime. What makes Nepali cinema so exciting is this journey. It’s a film culture that respects its romantic past while bravely forging a new, world-class identity, all with a uniquely resilient and soulful spirit.
