The cinema of Montenegro

Montenegrin cinema is a world of dramatic mountains and sharp, dark humour, a film culture with a character as rugged and soulful as its stunning Adriatic coastline. As one of the world's youngest countries, its modern cinematic story is one of fresh, independent energy. For years, its filmmakers contributed to the broader Yugoslav film scene, but since independence, a distinctly Montenegrin voice has come into its own. A new generation of directors has earned festival acclaim by exploring the nation's unique identity. They often use a wonderfully black, satirical humour to look at the transition from an old world to a new one, crafting stories about family and honour in a changing society. Director Ivan Salatić's beautifully atmospheric films, like You Have the Night, have been praised for their poetic and introspective style. The nation's jaw-dropping natural beauty, from the dramatic Bay of Kotor to its soaring mountain peaks, has also made it a star in its own right, attracting international productions, including a key role in the James Bond blockbuster Casino Royale. What makes Montenegrin cinema so compelling is this very blend of epic landscape and intimate, often very funny, human drama. It’s a cinema with a unique spirit, proudly telling its own stories from a fresh, new perspective.
