The cinema of Moldova

Moldovan cinema is a world of passionate musicality and deep poetic soul, a film culture born from a nation at the crossroads of Latin and Slavic Europe. At its heart for decades was the legendary Moldova-Film studio. During the Soviet era, it became home to one of the region’s most romantic filmmakers, the celebrated Emil Loteanu. His beautiful, musical epics, like the folk musician tale Lăutarii and the sweeping romance Gypsies Are Found Near Heaven (O șatră urcă la cer), were massive hits across the entire Soviet Union, filled with a spirit and passion that felt distinctly Moldovan. But the studio also had a gentler, playful side. It created a beloved animation tradition, most famously giving life to Guguță, a charming little shepherd boy with a big heart and an even bigger hat, who became a cherished national character. After independence, a new generation of filmmakers emerged, forging an independent voice. They began to explore the nation's recent history with a fresh perspective and a wonderfully dark sense of humour. Recent films like the black comedy Carbon have earned international festival acclaim, proving the country’s cinematic spirit is as sharp and resilient as ever. What makes Moldovan cinema so unique is this very blend of grand, poetic romance and a grounded, witty view of life. It’s a cinema with music in its heart.
