The cinema of Jordan

Jordanian cinema has a unique and powerful double identity: it is both a spectacular Hollywood backlot and the home of a vibrant new wave of Arab storytelling. For decades, its breathtaking landscapes have played a starring role on the world stage. From the timeless epic Lawrence of Arabia to the otherworldly deserts of Dune and The Martian, the country's stunning vistas in Wadi Rum and the ancient city of Petra have been Hollywood’s go-to for grand spectacle. But in recent years, a brilliant generation of Jordanian filmmakers has stepped firmly into the spotlight. The crowning achievement is Naji Abu Nowar’s Oscar-nominated masterpiece Theeb, a powerful Bedouin western filmed with local tribespeople in the heart of the desert. It announced a new, confident voice in world cinema. This has been followed by more acclaimed directors telling powerful, distinctly Jordanian stories. This creative explosion has also conquered television, most famously with the smash-hit series AlRawabi School for Girls. This stylish and sharp teen drama became a global phenomenon, proving that modern Jordanian stories have universal appeal. What makes Jordanian screen culture so exciting is this very fusion. It's a place where ancient landscapes tell futuristic stories, and where a new generation of talent is telling its own urgent, authentic tales to the world.
