The cinema of North America

North American cinema is a true titan of global entertainment, a story told in three distinct and powerful voices: the blockbuster spectacle of the United States, the vibrant artistry of Mexico, and the unique independent spirit of Canada. For over a century, Hollywood has been the world’s dream factory, inventing the studio system, pioneering genres, and creating a form of blockbuster entertainment that defines popular culture. Its influence is immeasurable. But at the same time, Mexico was enjoying its own ‘Época de Oro’, a Golden Age of cinema that produced beloved stars and classic films that captivated the entire Spanish-speaking world. To the north, Canada fostered a different kind of filmmaking, creating an acclaimed public body in the National Film Board and nurturing a distinct, often introspective, creative voice. In recent decades, this creative exchange has become even more dynamic. Mexican directors like Guillermo del Toro and Alfonso Cuarón have become some of Hollywood’s most celebrated visionaries, while Canadian talent from Denis Villeneuve to the creators of hit series like Schitt's Creek have conquered the world stage. The continent also pioneered the ‘Golden Age of Television’, crafting complex, novelistic series that changed how stories could be told on screen. What makes North American cinema so endlessly fascinating is this very blend. It’s a place where massive-scale fantasy epics, deeply personal independent dramas, and passionate, colourful tales of life and family all flourish, constantly influencing and inspiring one another.
